I buried my rosary with Donna's cat. Belle was killed this afternoon, and Billy and buried her. I was the one to wrap her up...Donna couldn't stand to be there and Billy is more squeamish than sentimental. The bastard dog came back twice afterward (probably looking for the other cat, who showed up terrified shortly before the dog returned the second time); if the owner hadn't walked over and called the dog to her, Billy would have shot it. One minute more, and he'd have shot that dog. This is at least the third time that that pit bull has attacked someone (the others being one neighbor's cat and another neighbor's dog), and at least the third complaint with Animal Control.

My head hurts. I need a shower. I need a better day than this.

I'm really sorry to hear about that. Is there some sort of legal action you can take againist the owners of the dog?

One thing that is legal
I had this on police authority that you can respond to loose animals in a violent way so long as 1) you don't kill it before it has attacked 2) you don't maim it before it had attacked .

My Great Aunt and Grandpa have a neighbor that seriously had about 30 mutts that he just let keep breeding for fun...they would run loose and come poo in everyone else's yard. So the solution, paintball guns. You can shoot them as many times as you can fire, it won't kill them and leaves no lasting physical damage...though it will only take a few times for them to learn not to come back.

This is Legal in NC according to our sheriff's deputy. And for what it's worth, my sympathy for losing the cat.

If Animal Control hasn't done anything about it after 3 complaints, get the police involved. The owner can be held legally responsible for her dogs actions. And if it's a dog that habitually kills other animals (particularly a pit bull) it might have been trained to do so, which could be an indicator that it participates in dogfights which are illegal. And whomever has the gun should keep it loaded and at hand. I'd have blasted the dog a long time ago. Hell I would have done it in front of the owner. People need to control their animals or suffer the consequences.
